There are many people affected by hearing loss each year. It might be caused by domestic violence, exposure to loud sounds, or a patient could have been born deaf. A hearing test will need to be done to verify that you are suffering a loss and to assess the type of loss you have. Patients often suspect a problem for a while before they look for help.
Patients are often worried about what will happen if a loss is confirmed. Some patients might be apprehensive about the hearing test itself. Still more, some patients know that if they find out there is a problem they have to decide what to do next. Even though it seems like you should want to improve your ear's function, some patients are nervous.
If you suspect a loss you should first see your physician. They can do an evaluation of your ears in their office. You might find this more comfortable. You will walk away knowing whether your suspicions have some merit. They won't be able to give details, but they will certainly be able to tell whether your ears look good and free of any infection. They will also be able to give you an idea of how much loss you might be suffering. If your physician thinks you need further assessment they will refer you to a specialist.
A specialist will have a sound proofed booth and headphones. You will be asked a series of questions about family background, and what made you think you were suffering a loss. They will then have a look in your ears and see if there is any notable damage, visible fluid, or an active infection that might impair your ear's ability to move sound. Once they complete this step they will send you into the booth. They will send sound through the headphones. They will ask you to identify which ear the sound came through by raising your hand. They will keep track of each ear and the sounds you heard. The specialist will be able to form a detailed result that shows you the ranges you hear within.
At some point every person should have a hearing test. If you suspect loss don't let the unknown keep you from hearing your favorite show or your grandchildren giggling. Most people can get a proper evaluation from their family physician, but if you suspect loss a specialist might be a better option. Take the time to consider what your loss might mean and what options you have available. While you can't treat hearing loss in most cases, there are personal devices to amplify sound. Do your research and be sure that you take your time finding a product to help you turn up the sounds in your world.
