"You can check in but never leave." Whether it's a relationship, over-committing or an unhealthy dietary habit, my specialty is helping you resolve most, if not all, of your unhealthy food habits. Surprisingly changing some dietary habits can often take care of a relationship issue, a boundary or over-committing tendency as well as a whole slew of things you put up with in your life.
My reference and the title of this article is about Hotel California - you know the Eagles song about never able to leave once you enter (start). Just like a habit - once you start it's hard to stop. Try as you might - your intentions are set, your calendar marked and your affirmations in tow. You are ready to get started - but for some strange freak of nature - you blow it. All your focus gone out the door- poof! You become distracted and all of a sudden you didn't do what you said you would or worse yet you compounded your bad habit - like eating too many sweets at the Baby Shower you attended last Sunday. You blame it on having no will power or even the brain power to resist. It's not easy - it's a battle out there... an in here - in your mind as well.
As we come to the ending of another year - you may be thinking - what did I do right this past year? What do I want do better? And what do I want, need or desire to change?
Here are 5 simple tricks to get out of Hotel California for once and for all:
#1 Don't beat yourself up. If your year wasn't exactly stellar and you thought those Skinny Jeans would be on you rather than in your closet but that didn't happen - don't worry. It takes time - mostly inside your mind first- to get to that place of truly committing to what you want sometimes on a daily and sometimes on an hourly basis. Change is not simple - it's absolutely doable - but not easy. So be easy on yourself as well as you move towards your future.
#2 Enlist Help. If you feeling vulnerable and alone it's best to get help. Call supportive friends up and ask them to go for a walk with you instead of going to lunch (you can eat that later on your own). It's very important that they be supportive and value similar things as you do and appreciate your efforts to get your life on track. Besides it's more fun with your buddies. Also, working with experts is often needed if you are struggling. They may just help you tweak what you're already doing and give you a few pointers. Or you may need a lot more support and expert advise depending on your goals, time frame and level of motivation and commitment.
#3 Forgive Yourself. Don't be hard on yourself - you are only human.
Forget about being perfect - it's an impossible feat and will make you feel like giving up every step towards your goal. You will make mistakes, you will get off track, you will over eat, you will over sleep, you will over work and over commit - that is part of life. However, if you are always do these things - that is very different. Then it becomes an unhealthy, unproductive and possibly damaging habit with consequences. Do your best, brush yourself off and start again and again until you get it and until you get more of what you do want rather than what you don't want.
#4 Rome wasn't built in a day - habits are the hardest thing to break. Just ask any ex-smoker. Smoking is actually a harder a habit to break than heroine. You must give yourself time. You are tackling perhaps a long held habit that is as comfortable as your old slippers and you know how much you love to wearing those around the house. This habit may have become a close friend - you have created it, on some level, to help you cope. And now it's become a comfort for you - and you feel like you can't eliminate it from you life all together. Remember - take baby steps.
#5 The Art of Substitution. Try something else. Perhaps eating fruit is sweet enough to curb your sugar cravings. Even nuts can do that for you, too. Go to a healthier restaurant instead of the ones you usually go to. Instead of going out for lunch every day - bring your own. It's usually fresher, more satisfying and you know what you're getting - there are no surprises.
