With winter taking its usual sweet time to fizzle out, a common complaint from most of my clients is cracked lips, more specifically, how to prevent them. If you suffer from cracked or chapped lips, you know that it's not only an aesthetic issue; but often quite uncomfortable too. To help you combat this common ailment, I've compiled a list of simple tips you can follow:
Step one: Increase your intake of vitamin A rich foods such as green leafy vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and all yellow and orange fruits and vegetables. Alternatively purchase a Vitamin A supplement.
Step two: Drink a minimum of 2 liters of water a day to keep your lips moist and hydrated - remember coffee doesn't count towards this quota, plus it is actually a diuretic, which will further dehydrate you.
Step three: Try to avoid licking your lips - the enzymes in saliva can cause your lips to crack even more.
Step four: Mix 1tsp of olive oil, 1tsp sugar and 1tsp petroleum jelly, in a bowl or container. Apply this mixture to the lips, leave to settle for about five minutes and then gently scrub. This will help to remove the flaky bits and dead skin from your lips. Once you have done this deep moisturize the area.
Step five: Any makeup artist will tell you that the number one rule of thumb for avoiding chapped lips, is to regularly use a lip balm throughout the day. I recommend Elizabeth Arden's 8 Hour Cream Lip Protectant Stick or Burt's Bees Lip Balm.
Step six: Apply your lip balm last thing at night, to ensure moisture is maintained throughout your sleep.
Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Lip Protectant Stick
Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Lip Protectant Stick was recommended to me a few years back, by a fellow makeup artist, when I was suffering from terrible cracked and painful dry lips. It remains one of my favorite lip balms today and I highly recommend it. Not only does it soothe and moisturize the lips, but it lasts for hours - so there's no need to constantly re-apply. It can also be used on cuticles and other dry skin patches on the face.
Cost in Ireland approx: 22.50 Euro.
Burt's Bees Lip Balm
Burt's Bees Lip Blam is perfect if you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Lip Protectant Stick. It is however more on the waxy side, and you can definitely feel the wax on the lips. Neverthless it does a great job moistening the lips and can last a few hours. It's also very soothing, cooling, and refreshing.
Cost in Ireland approx 3.50 Euro.
