Being into fashion, we girls love to step into the salon to get our nails done. We choose different colors depending on what our mood is, what we feel like putting on our nails, or what party we are going to. Sometimes, when we are saving some money, we just buy tiny bottles of these colorful nail polishes and do the manicure & pedicure in our own homes.
Wherever we choose to get our nails done, both have an effect on our nails. Of course, our nails will be pretty. But other than that, they could be damaged. Have you ever noticed cracks or lines on your nails when you take your polish off? I did observe mine and they have those. It happens after long exposure to nail polish.
Some say that our nails can reflect our health. They seem to be pinkish when we are totally healthy; a bit purplish when we lack oxygen. And a bit yellowish if we are always putting on nail polish. Add fine lines and cracks to that which proves that our nails get brittle as a negative effect of putting dyes on them.
What is in these pretty inks that could be harmful to our health? It is the chemical no other than formaldehyde. Is it not familiar? Yes, it is. Formaldehyde is the chemical we often hear related to embalming. It is also a primary content in plywood, glues, and adhesives. Imagine this strong-smelling chemical getting absorbed by our nails into your bloodstream. Keep in mind it is carcinogenic in nature, meaning, it can lead to cancer.
But why is this chemical in our nail polish? Formaldehyde is used as a hardener and preservative. There are other chemicals found in our nail lacquers that can cause harm to humans.
Another chemical is known as dibutyl phthalate or DBP, which is a plasticizer that prevents the nail polish from being brittle and cracking. DBP is linked to fertility concerns and that makes it dangerous for pregnant women.
Toluene is also a substance contained in polish. It suspends the paint so we would not have to shake the bottle every now and then before using it. Toluene, a chemical that does the same to gasoline, can get into our brains and make us dizzy and have a headache. It is also related to reproductive and developmental issues.
When we apply something on our bodies, we have to be aware not only of the physical improvement it could do, but also the damage it could cause. We women would not want to risk our future baby to suffer effects done by a tiny nail polish we use to get pretty nails.
