Manicures are an integral part of many individual's daily and weekly beauty routines. That being said, having too many manicures can damage the bed of your nail making your natural nails weak, brittle, and discolored. Regular manicures can also cost into the hundreds if you get one every week or even bi-weekly. There have been innovations however including UV gel nail polish which allows you a manicure like look for half the price and half the damage of traditional acrylic nails.
It is important that you first understand what UV gel nail polish really is prior to getting it done. The first thing that you need to know is that generally with gel manicures you do not use any nail extensions or lengtheners as with traditional acrylics. Gel nail polish is essentially very tough nail polish that works to strengthen your own nails rather than building up fake nails. This type of manicure is far less expensive than a traditional manicure for several reasons; the first is that it takes a fraction of the time of a traditional manicure. A gel manicure or shellac manicure takes about half an hour to an hour where a regular manicure can take up to an hour and a half if done properly.
Another reason this is less expensive is that they do not use as many materials and they last longer than other nail treatments. A gel manicure can last for up to three weeks with no visible signs of wear as opposed to a traditional manicure which starts showing grow out in about two weeks. The refilling process is also a bit easier than with acrylic. You do not have to build up the nail bed to match the height of the gel manicure which makes filling take half as much time with a gel manicure. On top of the benefits mentioned you also have far more options when it comes to color and finish with a gel manicure.
Unlike acrylics, nail polish remover does not affect the structure or integrity of a gel nail; to remove them you need a special acetone cleaner that is designed to remove gel nails. Because of this you can paint gel manicures freely and remove and change your polish as frequently as you choose. On top of that a gel manicure is much easier on your nails and does less damage in both the removal and application process. UV light is used to set the gel rather than using chemicals or other harsh materials to help cure acrylic.
A gel manicure may also be called a shellac manicure because you are only using the gel polish to help set and strengthen the nail as opposed to acrylic. A Shellac manicure or gel manicure is a great option if you are getting a manicure for the first time and want to try something only mildly damaging and far less expensive than other options. Most salons carry shellac manicures now and you can even buy at home kits if you feel as though you can handle doing this type of manicure yourself.
