If you have naturally dark hair, then most likely the spectrum of hair colors you have explored would be limited to browns, and dark red tones. But it is not your fault that you get stuck with boring colors! Blame the genetic composition of your hair instead, for there is little one can do with naturally dark hair without damaging the hair structure, or is it?
What are your options?
The excuse that one can only get bright colors through bleaching will no longer work because several brand names have formulated hair dyes (both home dye kits and professional hair dyes) specifically meant for dark hair. The L'Oreal Majicontrast line, and Schwarzkopf Brilliance line are some options one could consider getting. Although the range of colors available is still limited as compared to the options for our light-haired counterparts, one can now achieve shocking red, copper and purple tones without ever having to bleach your hair.
When to dye your hair?
After selecting your hair dye, the next step is to plan which day to color your hair. It is essential to leave your hair unwashed for at least 1 day before any coloring process. Shampooing strips your hair of its natural oils, which serves as a barrier between your scalp and the chemicals in the dye, thus making your scalp more susceptible to irritation by the harmful chemicals.
How to prepare your professional hair dye mixture?
If you have purchased a home dye kit, it would normally consist of the dye and a peroxide developer. Follow the instructions that comes with your kit.
If you have opted for a professional hair dye color instead, do note that you will need to purchase the peroxide developer separately. Developers come in different strengths, from 10 Volume (also called 3%) to 40 Volume (12%) peroxide, with 10 Volume being the weakest developer. The strength you should choose depends on two factors, namely the condition of your hair and the desired hair color you want to achieve.
Let's talk about the condition of your hair first. Common sense would tell you that if your hair is already damaged or overly processed from other chemical treatments such as relaxers and perms, then you choose definitely choose a lower strength peroxide developer so as to not further weaken your hair. A 10 or 20 Volume developer would be a safe bet in this case.
Peroxide developers, besides developing the hair dye through an oxidization process, also helps to lighten the existing hair color. Hence if you want a brighter and more dramatic color, then you should go with the highest strength of developer that your hair condition would allow.
Once you have both the developer and hair dye ready, read the instructions on the hair dye for the correct ratio of developer and hair dye to mix. A standard dye normally requires a 1:1 ratio e.g. 75ml of dye mixed with 75ml of developer. However please note that this depends on individual hair dyes and you should always refer to the purchased hair dye for the accurate proportions.
How to apply the hair dye?
Regardless of whether you are using a home dye kit or a professional hair dye, the same rules apply. Always start from the lengths of your hair, avoiding your hair roots. The roots area should be applied last, after all other parts of your hair have been covered. This is because the heat from your scalp would cause the roots to develop quicker than the other parts of your hair.
How long the dye is supposed to sit on your head would once again depend on each individual dye, and thus one should refer to the instructions for the exact time required.
How to maintain red hair?
The color red has the largest molecule among all colors, hence it is also one of the colors that fades out the fastest. It is annoying to spend money and time achieving the perfect shade of red, only to have it fade out in a matter of days or weeks. So here are a couple of tricks to prolong that amazing shade of red.
Firstly, use only shampoos and conditioners meant for colored hair. They are formulated to protect your hair color against UV rays and pollutants. If possible, opt for sulfate-free products as they cleanse the hair without stripping away color.
A great addition to your existing range of hair products would be a shampoo and/or conditioner for red hair. These products are typically tinted red, with the purpose of depositing color back into the hair shafts during each wash. A self-made substitute for red shampoos and conditioners is possible by purchasing a semi-permanent hair dye in the shade closest to your final hair color, and adding that to a bottle of shampoo/conditioner of your choice. There is no proper ratio required when mixing up your red shampoo and conditioner, so go with your gut feeling on this. Recommended usage of red shampoos and conditioners would be once to twice a week.
Lastly, you should always keep your hair moisturized. Colors do not hold well on dehydrated hair, hence one should indulge in a moisturizing hair treatment regularly. There are many drugstore brands that offers such products at a relatively good price. You can also deep condition your hair by leaving your hair conditioner in for a minimum of 30 minutes, with a shower cap on for better penetration of the product. Other possibilities also include doing hot oil treatments such as coconut or olive oils.
Achieving bright hair colors does require an amount of knowledge and skill in order not to damage your hair.
