About Yeast Infections
By Jafar Adam
Yeast infection is a term used more commonly to refer to fungal infections such as thrush or candidiasis. A yeast infection is caused by the overgrowth of the yeast called Candida, or the yeast family. Yeast infections can affect either the mouth or tongue called oral candidiasis, or the female genitals where the infection is referred to as vaginal yeast. In addition, the infection also occurs in babies, where it causes diaper rash.
During the course of this article, oral candidiasis and yeast infection of the genitals will be discussed in detail.
Oral Candidiasis:
A yeast infection which occurs in the mouth or tongue is known as thrush. The infection is characterized by the occurrence of white lesions inside the mouth. The lesions are located on the inner part of the cheeks or the tongue, but in some cases, they also appear on the roof of the mouth or on the tonsils. The symptoms of oral candidiasis include white spots inside the mouth and the tongue, redness in the affected areas, a weakened sense of taste, sore throat, and pain. The infection is more likely to occur in babies or in people who wear braces or dentures. In addition, it also affects people with weakened immune systems.
Oral Candidiasis is not that serious of a condition and is only a mild irritation in most cases. Thus, it is also not difficult to treat. However, for people who have severely weakened immune systems, the infection can become a serious issue. The treatments for oral candidiasis include using antifungal medications either in the form of a mouthwash or a pill.
In the more serious cases, an injection containing antifungal drugs is given to patients through the vein. No matter how light the infection is, it is recommended to treat it quickly as possible as thrush can become dangerous and cause great harm if it enters the bloodstream.
Genital Yeast Infection:
Genital Yeast infection occurs mostly in women, where every 3 out of 4 women are affected by the infection at least once in their lives. However, the infection can occur in men too through sexual contact. The infection is characterized by itching in the genital area, redness, soreness, and discomfort. For men, the infection is characterized by a rash on the genitals and a burning feeling. The treatment for this infection is similar to oral candidiasis and antifungal medications are usually provided to patients so that the infection heals quickly. In addition, there are also ointments available that can be applied to the affected areas to get rid of the infection. These medications can be used both by men and by women.
While the condition is not that serious, it is still important to seek medical help and get the infection treated since it can be passed on to a partner through sexual contact.
