Did you survive Thanksgiving? I hope you were able to enjoy good family, friends, and plenty of food! All of the "back at it" comments I read online today got me thinking about New Year's (Fitness) Resolutions, and why I think they are goofy. I've got a better idea: Make a December Resolution and get a month ahead of the game! Today is November 23rd, which gives you a week to mentally, physically, and emotionally prepare yourself.
"But I love Christmas and the holidays - the food, the drinks, the cookies... there is no way I could get into a workout routine and bother eating healthy during this time!" Why not? It's possible. Think how good you'll feel and/or look if you decide to be one of those people who don't gain the typical holiday 5 pounds but actually loses 5 pounds! Does this mean you will suffer through the holidays? No way! Enjoy a few drinks with family and friends, eat one of your favorite cookies, but also do it smartly: don't eat all of the cookie dough, stick to low-calorie alcoholic beverages, and remind yourself what your goal is.
New Years Fitness Resolutions can be doomed to fail because people have high expectations of what they can do. We can do anything we set our minds to, but we need to work at it. It's called a work-out, not a chill-out. People have this idea that once they make it back into the gym in January that the weight will suddenly fall off and all will be right again. However, that is not always the case. When the gyms get over-crowded, people get cranky and start to lose motivation. Pretty soon they don't enjoy the Monday/Tuesday gym days because it's too crowded, they find excuses to throw away their healthy eating, and before you know it, it's another 365 of weight gain instead of weight loss or maintain.
Instead, start a December Resolution. Beginning a month early will give you 31 days to have diet, exercise, and motivation in place to continue through the New Year. It takes about 3 weeks to kick/form a habit, and that will lead you right into the tail end of December. It also requires some dedication on your end. It all depends what it is you're looking for. I talk to so many people who tell me they want to lose weight but don't want to give up their favorite foods or drinks. Well, losing weight can be easy. Just get into a caloric deficit, right? Right. However, people don't want to invest the time to track calories. Then they don't have time for the gym. Sorry, I don't buy it. I have 24 hours each day and so do you. 6-8 hours is recommended for sleep each night; I get about 7 - and so that leaves us with 16-18 hours where we are awake. Factor in work, family duties, etc, and you still should have SOME time to work out. Excuses only get you further behind.
Best of luck to those of you who are ready to get in shape in 2013. There's still plenty of time to begin!
