What is Infertility?
We can define it as: "condition of the reproductive system that prevents the conception of fetus."
Conception (or pregnancy) is quite a complicated process that depends upon quite a few factors. If any of these factors can't be achieved the conception process is negative. Some of these factors are:
  • A man must provide healthy semen for a woman,
  • A women must be producing healthy eggs,
  • Fallopian tubes must be unblocked for semen to be able to reach the egg,
  • Semen must have the ability to fertilize the egg,
  • Once egg is fertilized it becomes embryo and it must be able to get implanted in women uterus,
  • Embryo must survive meaning that it must be a healthy/quality embryo.
Main causes at men
Male infertility is commonly caused by next issues:
  • Compromised semen production: This can be due to undescended testicles, genetic defects or various infections.
  • Semen "logistics": Main reasons for this are premature ejaculation, dyspareunia (pain while having love), retrograde ejaculation, various genetic diseases (ex.:cystic fibrosis) or structural problems.
  • Health and lifestyle: Using drugs, excessive drinking or cigarette smoking can highly compromise ability to generate healthy semen.
  • Environmental factors: Overexposure to pesticides or other chemicals can be a main reason for a male partner to not be able to produce healthy semen.
  • Chemo or Radiation (Cancer patients): Cancer patients that have treated cancer with chemotherapy or radiation can have severely damaged semen production.
Main causes at women
When a woman suffers from infertility disorder it can usually be due to several reasons:
  • Endometriosis: When cells from the lining of the womb (uterus) grow in other areas of the body. Endometriosis disease is often affecting semen, eggs and ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes.
  • PCOS - Polycystic ovary syndrome: PCOS is one of the most common female endocrine disorders. The cause for this disease is unknown. This condition makes woman's ovaries and, in some cases the adrenal glands, produce more androgens (a type of hormone) than normal.
  • Uterine fibroids: These are benign tumors (leiomyoma) which develop in woman's uterus, making female partner unable to conceive a baby.
  • Fallopian tube damage: Fallopian tube damage is one of the most common causes of female infertility. The most frequent cause for this diseas is Chlamydia (infection).
  • Early menopause: When a woman stops having menstruation before age of 40. The cause is often unknown but it is associated with smoking, imune system diseases, radiation or chemo, etc.
Treatments of infertility
There are various treatments for infertility disorder. I would like to mention next ones: At-home conception kitAt-home assessmentMedical treatmentsFertility tourism.
When talking about At-home conception kit we mean a prescriptive medical device but it is not commonly prescribed by doctors. Cervical caps for conception are the key to this device. All the semen is placed against the cervical os for at least 6 hours allowing all available semen to be placed directly on it.
At-home assessment it's a calculation of chances for conception. It can provide very useful information for women who are trying to conceive with IVF (in vitro fertilization). This calculation is based on several variables such as woman's age, number of past pregnancies, etc.
Medical treatments mean use of fertility medication (fertility drugs), use of various medical devices patented for infertility sufferers, use of surgery procedures, or in some cases variations of all previous mentioned methods. These medical treatments can be successful but usually cost a lot of money and are also risky for the patient.
While there is one more treatment called Fertility tourism which is actually a practice of traveling around the world and seeking various kinds of fertility treatments. Main reason for such act are legal boundaries regarding artificial insemination and also costs of such treatment. In vitro fertilization may be cheaper in USA than it is in Europe (for example).
Alternative medicine as infertility treatment
Lately we have been a witness to methods based on alternative medicine which promises to cure infertility. Surprisingly while doing a research on this subject I had come across many positive feedback on this matter.
What is alternative medicine treatment?: It comes from Chinese holistic medicine (herbs). It is actually not even a real medicine. It uses methods that are not scientifically proven to work but promises same medical results as a normal medical treatment. Its an unproven methodology that is usually cheaper then real medicine and some people believe in it. BUT it has never been proven not to work (or vice-versa).
These Alternative medicine infertility treatments are usually based on:
  • Living a healthy life (no smoking, no drinking),
  • Eating correct food (particular foods and drinks have been proven to increase fertility in some cases),
  • Doing correct exercises (for example yoga, jogging),
  • And living life in a style that will supposedly increase your fertility.
My humble opinion about alternative medicine is that it can help but not if you are 100% proven by doctors that you or your partner are infertile. If you are suffering from a minor case of infertility and are having trouble to conceive but you just need to boost your fertility to higher level in order to get pregnant, than maybe alternative medicine can help you. Otherwise I'm afraid that only real medical procedures can be the solution.
