Everything You Want to Know About Penis Size But Are Afraid to Ask: Self-Acceptance Amid Media Hype

Everything You Want to Know About Penis Size But Are Afraid to Ask: Self-Acceptance Amid Media Hype

Expert Author Dr. Zen-Jay Chuang
I recently discussed the modern preoccupation with penis size, and how exaggerated stereotypes cause millions of men to feel embarrassed, ashamed and overly anxious about their sexual performance.
In this article, we will look at the influence of modern media on this stereotype and how men are exploited by shrewd marketers to buy products to enhance their manhood.
The Blitz on Penis Size by Marketing and Media
With the constant barrage of marketers touting remedies and wares to enlarge a man's organ to "impress" his mate(s), many men get the idea that the whole world has certain size requirements they are expected to meet.
The media also shares part of the blame. Here are just two examples.
In late 2012, respected media outlet, the Huffington Post UK used the attention-grabbing headline, "penis size does matter... " even though the "hot" research study it featured clearly said that most women do not care about penis size.
As recently as April 2013, NBC News proclaimed, "science proves women like men with bigger penises." This statement is despite their cited research saying that among three different factors:
• shoulder to hip ratio, height, and penis size
• penis size accounts for only 5% of attractiveness of a man. (In case you are wondering, shoulder to hip ratio accounts for 89% while height accounts for 6%
• a clear reminder for men to work out more!)
What's more, in this particular study, women were basing their opinions after viewing flaccid (not erect) penises.
Making Money on Male Insecurity
If you search the internet, you will find many websites and blogs where men discuss and share tips on how to enlarge their penises, especially the length. It is no surprise then to learn how easily men can be exploited for their sense of insecurity.
This kind of exploitation results in fraud and abuse, and the victims tend to be too embarrassed to complain to the authorities.
Taking a cursory look at any men's magazine or website, you will find ads promoting different ways to enhance penis size. These can be any of the following:
  • Vacuum pumps
  • Weights to stretch the penis
  • Electrical or magnetic gadgets to "stimulate" penile growth
  • Pills, patches, secret formulas, or exotic herbs
There is no evidence that any of these "remedies" works in the long run. Some of them, such as the vacuum and weights, may temporarily stretch the penis. But, the penis tends to spring back to its original size. Despite its lack of effectiveness, some users of the vacuum pump feel a certain sense of psychological satisfaction, suggesting again that the problem is more in one's head than in the appendage.
What Your Doctor May Recommend
Other than surgery, the only device that may have some proof to lengthen a penis is a penis extender.
A penis extender works by applying a traction force that is progressively increased through time. For one particular model (and similarly with others), one has to wear the contraption for 6 hours every day for 6 months.
According to a review article published in the British Journal of Urology International May 7 2010, penis extenders may lengthen a penis from 0.5 to 0.7 inches (1.3 to 1.8 cm). However, all the studies done are not of high quality and any long-term negative effects of this stretching are not known.
Surgery usually is reserved, if at all, for an erect penis size of less than 3 inches, known as a micropenis. But there can be surgical complications including a misshapen penis, infection, additional sexual problems, and death.
If one truly has a micropenis, it is best to discuss the issue with a physician. But remember, men who have an erect penis size of 2 inches can have a very happy and satisfactory sex life just by being themselves.
The Bottom Line on Penis Size
An erect penis size of greater than 3 inches is normal. Chances are yours is too. Even if it is smaller than average, it may not matter as much as you think.
If after reading this article you still have anxiety regarding your penis size, I want to propose a few things that actually WILL make your life, and your sex life, more satisfying.
Talk to your partner. Start by communicating better with your partner on everyday matters. Once you feel more secure about things that do not touch too deeply within you, you may open up more. You may be happily surprised by the psychological intimacy and satisfaction you get from sharing your concerns. Your partner will appreciate it as well. This will surely heat up your sex life.
Eat healthy and get in shape. The extra fat pad in your pubic area from the excessive weight you carry hides part of your penis. Eating better and getting in shape by exercising will help you lose that extra tissue to reveal your true self. Eating well and exercise will also make you look better and give you more strength and endurance. Exercise even increases your sex drive and helps spice up your enjoyment of sex.
Trim your pubic hair. I see more and more pubic hair trimming in my patients. They tell me their partners like it or request it. Shorter pubic hair reveals more of your manhood. It also gives you a different sensation that you may find sexy.
Talk to your doctor or counselor. It is common for men to be unhappy about their penis size. Very often after reassurance by their doctor that they are normal, they feel much better. Your doctor or counselor may also have advice on how to better satisfy your partner regardless of your size.
Love yourself. It is possible that anxiety about your penis size reflects a larger issue of not having enough self worth. How to empower yourself with true self-esteem is beyond the scope of this writing. But as you can see here, a person can feel inadequate even though there is no true inadequacy. Does this reflect a deeper issue that can be worked on to make your life happier and more satisfying? This is a question that only you can answer.
