Mastering The Perfect Fringe

Mastering The Perfect Fringe

Many women will have a childhood memory of a fringe gone wrong. Everyone has had a fringe which was too short, too flick, or just too annoying to get right. However, a fringe can be very flattering and once you have mastered the knack of getting it perfect, it can solve all your problems with cowlicks, wayward curls and the fuzzy new baby hair growing on your hairline. It is also a very versatile hair style, perfect for jazzing up a plain ponytail when you can't be bothered, accenting a fabulous up do and framing your face.
The first thing to consider when contemplating a fringe is the shape of your face. If you have a round face, your best choice is a short or straight fringe. Fringes that are a little shorter in the middle give length to a round face making it appear more oval. If your face is square, aim for a wispier, more feminine fringe to soften your features. A long side sweeping or asymmetrical fringe is perfect for those with a long face.
Typically a long face has a high forehead and when a fringe covers it, the face is shortened and appears rounder. Side sweeping and asymmetrical fringes also look perfect on a heart shaped face as they made the forehead appear less prominent. A blunt fringe cut straight across just below the eyebrows will also cover the forehead and soften a pointed chin.
You will also need to consider your hair type. A fringe can make thick hair a fabulous asset, but if you have cowlicks, a straight heavy fringe is going to be very high maintenance.
Finally, you need to get some impartial advice. A fringe cut at home can spell disaster. An experienced hairdresser will be able to guide you into the right fringe for your face and hair type.
Fringes are often best blow dried. This keeps them going in the "right" direction. It is also important to choose the right products. Many stylists recommend mousse when blow drying to set the hair. Too many smoothing products and serums can make a fringe look greasy. Products with alcohol in them also tend to weigh the hair down. Avoid fiddling with your fringe with your fingers as this will also transfer oil to your hair. A good wax or pomade will help with the finishing touches and definition.
Fringes do take maintenance in the form of regular trims to keep you looking your best. If you need a quick tidy up at home, go little by little and hold your fringe out and cut into the edge with points of the scissors so you chip away until desired length. Aim for half an inch longer than you think because it is all too easy to over cut.
