We've Been Told to Eat Organic! How Do We Know What Is Organic and What Is Not?

Definition of organic: Where are we going with this? Are you confused, unsure because not knowing where to find it; and is it organic? You can put your mind at ease! You are not the only one. There are many of us in the same state of confusion.
The word organic means simply it is a product grown without pesticides, antibiotics, hormones or biotechnology. Prior to 1990 most if not all products been organic or let's say, the natural way as produced by nature. About the same time in the mid nineties GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) came on the market and that triggered basically the end of organic products.
Such things as plant and animals produced through gene splicing technique of biotechnology or Genetic Engineering. This was the end of most natural products what became non organic. All this technique and interference with nature did not benefit the farmer in the long run, for us, the many health issues developed and we will suffer from it for many decades to come.
How do we know what is organic? There are ongoing endless debates and most likely they continue for a long time. The outcry from the public and consumers is increasing its momentum for a clear definition of what is organic and what is not.
Labels should state clearly if the product has any GMOs, included so the consumer can make a conscious decision. However, there are some new rules coming in to effect soon about organic dairy and meat which may help to give more options and better choices for the consumer. Those must come from animals that have had access to pasture, normal grass feed and an open free environment. There must also be some assurance of organic food quality from growers and manufacturers of organic products with stricter standards of what is available. Unless the label laws changed to give better and clearer information we will never know what is real organic and what is not!
Food certified as organic! There are already some organic food quality rules in place where farmers and growers have to meet certain strict standards. There are regulations for farmers who want to harvest wild crop and sell it as an agricultural-organic "certified" product. This means to qualify a product as organic it requires using strict organic farming methods. Crops and ingredients used in any product are grown without synthetic pesticides, petroleum - based fertilizer or any Bioengineered genes etc. Livestock must have access to outdoors for specified times, and cannot be fed growth hormones, antibiotics, preservatives or flavour-enhancing chemicals. If a product as labeled 100 percent organic it must contain only organic materials. If you do find a certified label organic the chances you are a step closer to healthy food.
What does grass-fed mean? Grass-fed organic products such as meats and dairy are the best and safest to consume. Meat and dairy products identified with a "Grass-fed label" goes even beyond and above any organic label. Only certain types of feed sources are acceptable. There are strict regulatory rules on products before a label organic is shown. This means the diet of the animal shall be derived only from forage consisting of annual and perennial grasses. Animals are not fed grain and must have continues access to outdoor pasture during the season. Some supplementation of vitamins and minerals may also be used in the diet. It also means, this grass-fed diet is to continue for the entire life time of that animal to qualify as "grass-fed".
All of this is a step in the right direction and is only in the beginning stages of bringing us back to a reasonable food supply as it was normal many years ago before nature been interfered by Genetically Modified Organisms.
