Pain and Liposuction: Top 7 Questions and Their Answers

Pain and Liposuction: Top 7 Questions and Their Answers

Expert Author Manuel Porras
There are so many facts and myths associated with pain after liposuction. People are afraid of coming under the needle just because of the painful stories they have heard. However, here are given answers to top 7 questions that are related to post liposuction pain.
1. Am I Going to Feel Pain During Surgery?
No, you are not going to feel any pain or other intense sensation during surgery. Mostly, there is a mild feeling similar to massage with a stone. During surgery, you can talk to your doctor and you can feel what is going on in the room.
2. When will I Feel the Pain?
Anesthesia persists for 24 to 48 hours depending on the type of anesthesia used in the surgery. You will feel soreness and tenderness for this period. The type of pain you might feel after 24 - 48 hours is similar to the muscular pain you experience after too much weight lifting or extreme work out at gym. This pain can be easily treated with Tylenol.
3. What will be the Intensity of Pain?
Intensity of the pain will be low if a professional and well-trained doctor treats the patient. Type of anesthesia also decides about intensity of the pain. In case of local anesthesia, the intensity is low. However, if the patient is treated with general anesthesia the intensity of pain will be higher than local anesthesia. In such conditions, patient might be given narcotic analgesics. Tylenol will not be enough with general anesthesia.
4. Does the Use of Local Anesthesia Causes Low Degree Pain than General Anesthesia?
There is no established research in this regard. However, much is shared by the patients. Most of the patients who have undergone surgeries with both local as well as general anesthesia believe that local anesthesia works better than general anesthesia.
5. Do Elastic Compression Garments Affect Post Operative Pain?
Yes, elastic compressions garments can reduce the pain. Actually, it is the drainage of inflammation causing blood tinged anesthetic solution that will sooth the pain. These garments press the solution out of the body, thereby making a drainage path for post operation anesthetic solution.
6. What is the Role of Inflammation-Causing Blood-Tinged Anesthetic Solution in Easing the Pain?
There are two techniques used post liposuction. One is to stitch the incisions caused due to insertion of cannula. In this technique, the incisions are closed; therefore the drainage remains inside and is sucked or drained by other mechanisms.
In second technique, the incisions are left open so that the anesthetic solution drains out of the body. Second technique is better than the first one because within 24 - 48 hours the pain will almost be relieved. Compression garments along with super absorbent pads are worn on the incisions during this phase. These compressions press the body part and allow more drainage. Once all of the blood tinged anesthetic solution is drained out of the body, you can remove compression garments.
7. What Are the Causes of Soreness and Swelling and How to Reduce it?
Anesthetic solution that is trapped inside the body is cause of swelling and soreness. Once this comes out of the body, the soreness as well as swelling will start fading away. Dead tissues and red blood cells are causes of inflammation on the incisions. The inflammation then encourages swelling and soreness, making incisions tender to touch.
Once the anesthetic solution, dead tissues and red blood cells are pushed out of the body, the swelling and sourness will fade away. Not closing the incisions with stitches and regularly wearing compression garments can help maximize process of reducing soreness and swelling.

  1. To remove unwanted fat from my hips and thighs, I also went through a liposuction procedure in Toronto last year. I didn't feel pain during surgery or after it. Maybe because my doctor was very skilled and experienced. I'm very happy with my body contour now! By the way, great article, Manuel! Thanks for the sharing.
