There's Honey on Your Face!

There's Honey on Your Face!

Sweeten your morning cleansing routine
The other day I shared a post from Crunchy Betty's Blog about cleansing your face with honey rather than a traditional store bought cleanser. I have started doing this personally and am loving the results. Most of the info I read on using honey in your natural skin care routine was instructional so I thought I'd add my two cents on why it's a good idea.
My two cents
Let's take a look at regular store bought cleanser. I have used Neutrogena in the past and I know it's very popular. The Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleanser is about $7 for 6.7 oz. Not a bad price. Let's see what's inside.
Ingredients: Water, Sodium C14 16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium C12 15 Pareth 15 Sulfonate, Salicylic Acid, Linoleamidopropyl PG Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Disodium EDTA, Propylene Glycol, FD&C Yellow 5, FD&C Red 40, Fragrance.
Yikes!
To begin with the product base is water, which does contain contaminates.
The second ingredient is Sodium C14 16 Olefin Sulfonate which is a synthetic cleansing agent (also used in detergents). It can potentially dry out and irritate the skin. Let's just say it isn't gentle.
Who's up next? Cocamidopropyl Betaine, come on down! This ingredient is derived from coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine and is used to make shampoos and cleansers lather. Unfortunately it is a skin, eye and lung irritant and under the right conditions (heat or acidity) it can form carcinogenic nitrosamines (cancer causing bad guys).
Those are just the first three ingredients. Feel free to research the rest on your own. Some are considered more toxic, while others are safer or not toxic at all.
The point is... why use a product made with harsh synthetic ingredients in your skin care routine? Many products claiming to be "natural" or "organic" have some of these same ingredients.
Sweeter, gentler, CHEAPER!
So here is where the Honey comes in. Let's take a look at the ingredients. Oh no wait... we don't have to. It's just honey. That's right get to your nearest, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, or the "granola" section of your regular grocery store and pick up some raw honey. Just be sure it is raw and unprocessed. The honey I bought was $6.99 for 14 oz. So we already have the Neutrogena beat on price.
The Why?
So what are the benefits in using honey in your natural skin care routine? You like Dr. Oz? Here's what he says...
Honey is a "powerful food, beauty aide and a topical antibiotic." Dr. Oz
Honey works as a natural moisturizer because it attracts water and locks it in.
It is a natural antioxidant and can protect the skin from sun damage and premature wrinkling.
Honey is healing. Honey has natural antimicrobial properties that make it great for infection.
Here's a cool little tidbit from Livestrong.com
"When honey makes contact with the substances secreted from a wound, it may produce a type of hydrogen peroxide that prevents bacterial growth, notes NZDS. This antibacterial action may help speed the healing of minor wounds."
Why not try it?
So it's completely natural, cheap and easy. Are ya sold yet? I am. If you would like to know the "how" of washing your face with honey check outCrunchy Betty's Honey Challenge. The challenge is way past over but it's a great instructional.
If you decide to get sticky with your bad self (actually it washes of easily with cool water), let me know how it goes. I would love to hear!
